Issues: “If the government has the money for transport it should give it anyway without a charge”

Many people and groups, such as PACCA, seem to be of the view that if the government has the money for transport it should give it anyway without a charge.

This is totally wishful thinking and will not happen. The government is not just going to increase by ten times the amount of funding for transport it provides to Cambridgeshire just like that. Groups like PACCA are using this argument to dodge hard decisions.

The fact is that the funding of hundreds of millions of pounds up-front that would come – if such groups do not convince Councillors to throw it all away – are from a pot of money specifically designed to encourage local authorities to introduce congestion charging.

This fund, TIF – the Transport Innovation Fund is a recognition that widespread, good-quality alternatives to the car should be in place before any charge is introduced.
